Physical Education

AIMS

The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

INTENT

At St. Margaret Mary’s our intent is that children will be engaged, inspired and challenged. Physical Education is delivered through an engaging curriculum with children developing and building upon skills as they progress from Nursery through to Year 2. We aim to encourage children to communicate and work collaboratively in a range of group and team situations.

Our intent is to develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through a range of different sports and activities. At St Margaret Mary’s we strive to enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination and teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise.

IMPLMENTATION

As a school we plan topics to provide a progression and continuity of learning experiences across a wide range of sports and physical activities designed around three core areas: Dance, Gymnastics and Games. Through Physical Education, pupils are encouraged to be active and develop an understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Pupils are also encouraged during play times to take part in a variety of inclusive games led by our sports coach and playtime supervisors.

The Physical Education curriculum allows for pupils to learn about themselves and begin to recognise the importance of respect and fair play. Class activities are carried out in a safe and supportive environment, where effort and hard-work, as well as success, is celebrated.
